What’s the current political/economic state of Ukraine?

I was doing some research and I found that Russia had about 3x the population of Ukraine.

Since you are doing research, I will try not to interject my opinion about why these women are looking for foreign men too much. However, I will start with the fact that using the term “Mail Order Bride” bugs me, since it is a bit derogatory sounding as there is no such thing in most of the “Western” world, anyway.

The economic and political situation of Ukraine is “interesting”. Many will tell you the economy is healthy and growing, and that democracy is working well there. Others will say it is 3rd world, and more of a dictatorship. I will avoid that debate.

Realistically…

The cost of living is rising rapidly, and food prices have risen to a level where they are nearly on par with the US and Western Europe (the west). The government claims the cost of food has risen 20%, which they say is in line with the west. From what I have seen, the prices have more than tripled on most food items.

Housing is rising daily. Apartments that sold for a few thousand US dollars just 5 years ago are selling for $70-100k and more. Utilities have more than doubled in the last 2 years.

Salaries however, have remained largely static. Government workers in the last 2 years have seen an increase from about $125 per month, to about $150 per month.

Unemployment is exceptionally high. Partly because of the economy, and partly because of some “attitude” issues in part of the population (ie: my landlady’s husband quit work when he married her, because she had a job – so why should he work when he can stay home and drink and spends time with his buddies).

Politically, the government is a mess. Elections are done whenever part of the government decides that another part is not working. Whole courts are fired, politicians sell off government factories to “private parties” that are really just relatives of politicians, and they eliminate “ministry” license plates for their cars in the name of avoiding preferential treatment by police, but replace that symbol with a black Mercedes for each cabinet member, etc. So, corruption works in full force.

What I am saying is… the rich are getting filthy rich, while the common population suffers (some will say it is a part of the “democratic process” – even the US had such situations in it’s early years).

We can also add that in the 30+ age range in Ukraine, there are many more women than men (moreso than Russia). The depletion of men from the WW’s has been slower to recover in Ukraine than Russia. In my opinion partly because Russia rewards their people for repopulating better, and provides more “encouragement” for people to not leave the country.

Ukrainians are notorious for going to other countries on a visa and overstaying (or with no visa, or never return). They do this to send money back home for living. I think that says a lot about how the people feel about their economy (working/growing or not).

There is also the health risks. They still use lead base paint, lead pipes, there is the question of radiation from Chernobyl, AIDS, turberculosis, etc. A TV show just yesterday (on TV in Kyiv) talked about Ukrainians being “the least healthy people of Eastern Europe”).

Another issue is that western men treat women much better. Ukrainian men still have a 1950′s viewpoint of “men’s roles” and “women’s roles”. The women there crave attention and tenderness.

And despite what we westerners know about democratic and economic growth, people there feel the pinch and want better lives. My own wife (Ukrainian) loves her country, but sees many more opportunities for her and our daughter in the US, than in Ukraine.

In summary:

- inflation is high
- wages are low
- unemployment is high
- ratio of men to women is low
- view that western men are “better” men
- Ukrainians do not see the opportunities yet
- the government is young and unstable

When it comes to finding and corresponding with beautiful Ukrainian or Russian Mail Order Brides I am often asked what websites I recommend. Men want to know what sites to use to meet beautiful Russian and Ukrainian girls while avoiding the sites that have scammers on them. After all, nobody wants to get their heart broken and it can be frustrating to spend a bunch of time writing to a girl only to figure out that she is a scammer…or even worse, probably not even a she!

Free Sites – There are a lot of free ways to meet your potential Russian or Ukrainian Mail Order Bride. Social networking sites are just as popular in Russia and Ukraine as they are in your country. You might even find Mail Order Brides on the same sites that you use every day to keep in touch with friends and family. In addition there are social networking sites based in Russia and Ukraine that cater just to people from Russian and Ukraine.

The problem with many of these sites is that they are written in Russian and Ukrainian so if you aren’t fluent in these languages then you will definitely be at a loss for how to navigate these sites and communicate with women.

As far as free dating sites and social networking sites, you should proceed with caution since it is very easy for a scammer to set up a profile on one of these sites with stolen pictures and fake details. Scammers often even reuse the same pictures, details and even copy and paste the same emails to hundreds of men. Sometimes you can even throw a couple of sentences from a scammers email into a search engine and find it word for work on a site that profiles scammers. Heartbreaking, yes, but any time you are using a free site or not paying for translation services or going through an agency you should do your due diligence on your own before getting your hopes up.

Marriage Agencies – There are many marriage agencies in Ukraine and Russia that help mail order brides to connect with Western men. Some are good and some are not so good. Likewise, some of the mail order brides that you might come across and correspond with are going to have good intentions while others might not. It is up to you to figure out if a Ukrainian or Russian Mail Order Bride is sincere in her desire to have a relationship with you.

One thing that you can count on with many of the larger and well known marriage agencies is that all the lady’s information has been verified. This doesn’t mean that you can buy her contact information (unless you are willing to jump through all the necessary hoops to satisfy IMBRA regulations if you live in the US) but you can be sure that she isn’t married, lives where she says that she does and the pictures that you see on the agency’s website are in fact the mail order bride that you are writing to.

Many of the really large websites with thousand of profiles on them are actually almost a clearing house of profiles gathered from sometimes hundreds of smaller agencies from all over Russia and Ukraine. Some of the larger websites actually do spot checks on the agencies and will randomly call girls to verify information and make sure that things are on the up and up.

Is it possible to be scammed by a mail order bride from a marriage agency? Of course! It is always possible that a woman is not sincere or is just playing games or that she is just looking for a green card but typically not. These women have to go through a lot to correspond with you and it can be an effort to write letters and keep up with corresponding and just like you will experience, chances are she will go through writing to a lot of guys that she is either not interested in or who are just jerks before she finds you. Yes, it pays to be cautious but try not to be paranoid. You could very well hurt her feelings and destroy something wonderful if you start questioning her motives. It definitely can be a bit of an emotional minefield and one area where many men screw up, so just be aware. Not every mail order bride is a scammer and there are tons of very beautiful and charming Russian and Ukrainian mail order brides just waiting to meet the man of their dreams…don’t let her down by being a jerk.
